What is the Enneagram?
by Holly Hogue
The Enneagram is a tool for understanding our personalities. The symbol of the Enneagram is a circle connecting nine points which represent personality types. The points are connected along the outside to form the circle. All nine personalities have natural paths which are shown inside the circle connecting the points by a series of lines. We have added the arrows to portray the path each personality takes toward achieving health and happiness. The 9 points are described by clicking on the numbers on the Enneagram above. Each personality is described briefly, portraying average, unhealthy, and healthy traits.
Our intention is to learn how to reach the higher side of our personalities so that we may more fully enjoy our relationships, the Universe, and love ourselves. All of us have experienced the ENERGY of each of the points on the Enneagram at some time or another. For example, we have tapped into 9 energy to keep the peace, 8 energy to lead or protect others, 7 energy to have fun, etcetera. This is why the experts say sometimes it takes a long time to type yourself. It can also be very surprising to discover your personality type and see that your strategies are not unique. Even more significantly, by understanding the essence or forceful drive behind the energy of your personality, you have the opportunity to redirect the energy when you desire.
The circle of nine points of the Enneagram provide us with the basic information concerning the personalities. The lines which connect the points internally show the directions of the personalities toward happiness or stress. Since we are concerned with the healthy side of our personalities, all arrows point to highest good energy for each type. If you want to know the stress movement within the Enneagram, simply reverse the arrows. Utilizing the Enneagram, you can change directions and habits to feel good about yourself. In other words, when you are able to see yourself approaching stressful situations and you understand what you do to make the situation even worse, you can instead choose the healthy direction — turn your negatives into lessons and your challenges into opportunities.
